Hong Kong’s first Grill Manten-Boshi restaurant is located in the Harbour City’s Ocean Terminal. Founded in 1978 by Yoshinao Kubota — a disciple of Emperor Shōwa’s imperial chef, Tokuzō Akiyama — the first Grill Manten-Boshi is located in Tokyo, Japan, where it has continued to welcome local diners in search of the shop’s famous Japanese-style omelet rice (commonly known as ‘omurice’) to this day. The Hong Kong restaurant is dedicated to preserving this tradition, presenting Hong Kong diners with a curation of fresh ingredients and a series of signature items from Japanese “Grill Manten-Boshi” locations that can be enjoyed as they were meant to be right here in the city.

The Original Spirit Lives On

Famous across Japan, Grill Manten-Boshi’s most prized gem is without a doubt its omurice. Created with influences from both the French and Japanese culinary tradition along with quality ingredients imported directly from Japan, the Hong Kong location retains this crucial East-West combination so that local diners can enjoy Grill’s signature flavors without compromise. Grill Manten-Boshi applies this meticulous attention to detail in its treatment of the three essential elements of its omurice:

The Egg: while omelet rice appears in many forms, Grill’s omurice spares no effort to produce a uniquely unforgettable interpretation of this classic dish. Made using three Ran-Oh eggs, the resulting batter is soft and fluffy, and includes a mixture of shrimp, scallops and green beans.

The Rice: continuing the tradition of Japanese attention to detail, the rice filling features eight ingredients that include bamboo shoots, onions, corn and shiitake mushrooms, which are first cooked and then baked in a secret chicken broth.

The Sauce: variations of the omurice can be enjoyed with a selection of three inspired secret sauces that include omurice sauce for omelet rice served with tomato sauce, Japanese yakiniku sauce to be paired with hamburger steak, and curry sauce to accompany curry omurice. The sauces are made with a bounty of beef ribs and fresh ingredients including carrots, onions and celery that are then simmered over the course of a week.

The Classic Flavors of Japanese-style Western Dishes and Flavors

Grill Manten-Boshi is not just renowned for its omurice and there are also a number of trademark dishes from the Japanese locations that can be enjoyed at the new Hong Kong restaurant. The must-try Crab Cream Croquette is filled with a mixture of crab meat and house cream sauce, then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy before being finished with a in-house tomato sauce. Another signature starter, the Deep-Fried Hamburg Steak, is made with a 7:3 ratio of Kagoshima Wagyu beef and Waton pork from Hokkaido. The Slow Cook Beef Curry Rice remains a long-lasting classic at Grill Manten-Boshi’s original locations, and is made from American beef short ribs that are immersed in a secret sauce and cooked for 36 hours until tender.

Hong Kong Exclusive Surprises In Store

In addition to offering Japan’s best and most popular omelet rice, the Hong Kong restaurant also offers a series of limited signature dishes, including the first-ever Eel Omelette Rice where tender, thickly sliced eel is paired with a velvety sauce for a decadent but balanced match to the classic omelet rice. Another menu highlight is the Hong Kong-exclusive Steak-Teppanyaki, which features a rich and meaty cut of Kagoshima A4 Wagyu Sirloin served sizzling hot and elevated with a dash of sauce drizzled on top. Last but not least, The Lobster Roll is a mouth-watering American-style lobster roll with a savory three-cheese sauce that can be found nowhere else but in Hong Kong.
