Fion Hung’s Solo Exhibition “The Skeletons in the Closet” @Harbour City

10 Jul, 2025

Emerging Hong Kong artist Fion Hung unveils her very first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, “The Skeletons in the Closet” at Gallery by the Harbour, running from 10 July to 3 August 2025. As a multifaceted visual artist, researcher, and art educator currently teaching photography at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, Fion brings a unique perspective to her work. Her distinctive approach to “constructed photography” captures the complex realities faced by contemporary women within traditional frameworks. By transforming everyday interactions into striking visual narratives infused with surreal aesthetics, Fion intertwines humour and poignant social commentary, often hidden beneath sugary, candy-like tones.

This exhibition reinterprets the traditional Chinese tale of “The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars” through a modern lens, showcasing 24 captivating photographic collages that blend surrealism with black humour. Audiences are invited to engage with these works and rethink the significance of filial piety in today’s society.

After the passing of her grandmother in 2016, Fion began a deep reflection on her role within the family and issues of gender. Following five years of contemplation, she created the “The Skeletons in the Closet” series between 2021 and 2022. Through meticulously staged photography and digital collage techniques, she transforms traditional filial piety stories into a highly contemporary artistic language.

Each of Fion’s works integrates exaggerated body language, vibrant colour contrasts, and thoughtfully arranged props, creating visual narratives that are both absurd and thought-provoking. The exhibition title “The Skeletons in the Closet” cleverly alludes to the subtle topics often avoided within families.

Fion also highlights two stories from “The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars” that particularly fascinate her. A large sticker displayed in the gallery’s window features the work “He Personally Tested His Mother’s Prescriptions”, which humorously reinterprets the filial piety tale of “Emperor Wen of Han Tasting Medicine for His Sick Mother”.

In the center of the exhibition, a surreal scene representing “Stealing Oranges to Take Home for His Mother” creates a dreamlike yet absurd immersive space. A sofa piled with oranges invites visitors to engage with the artwork. Audiences can not only sit on the sofa for photos but also personally experience the conflicting emotions of “Stealing Oranges for Family”—when you see the oranges on the sofa, do you feel the urge to secretly hide one and take it home for your beloved ones?
