Blur imperfections and set makeup with The Silk Powder, a protective talc-free formula that filters pollution and daily blue light exposure. Crafted with amino acid-rich silk extracts, luminous Japanese pearl, and Tatcha’s proprietary complex Hadasei-3™, this finely milled setting powder provides a soft radiant finish for a video-friendly glow that lasts all day.

This skincare-first formula was inspired by oshiroi, the opaque white makeup worn by geisha to shield their delicate complexions. Applied over bintsuke wax (the inspiration for The Silk Canvas primer), this protective white powder is mixed with water before being applied to the face and neck.

To bring this iconic beauty ritual to modern life, scientists at the Tatcha Institute in Tokyo looked to the nourishing, protective power of silk. Anchored in a complete silk protein, the formula locks in moisture, helping the skin look its best, while silk powder reduces the look of pores and wrinkles, absorbs excess oil, and minimizes shine without drying, flaking or caking.

Like a breathable cocoon, The Silk Powder provides an invisible barrier between the skin and the elements, helping to prevent premature signs of aging and irregular skin pigmentation with a shielding compound that provides 30% blue light protection when worn alone. Enriched with Tatcha’s proprietary complex Hadasei-3™, this kind-to-skin setting powder smooths texture with naturally occurring lactic acid for flawless application. A blend of pink and gold Japanese pearl powder leaves skin with a luminous veil of protection.

Discover the soft radiance of silk with this gentle, talc-free setting powder that protects both makeup and skin.

The History of Oshiroi

Centuries ago when geisha performed by candlelight, they applied an opaque white makeup called oshiroi to better illuminate their faces and give their skin a silky-smooth, porcelain finish. The tradition continues largely unchanged to this day, with modern oshiroi made with protective ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Moist to the touch but solid in its small pan, the makeup is gently brushed onto skin in thin layers, create a protective veil that reflects and scatters light, serving as one of the original highlighting and finishing powders.

The Tatcha Institute Science: Why It Works

Silk Extract: With an amino acid-fortified structure similar to that of our skin surface, silk helps to maintain a healthy moisture balance in the skin, for a smoother, more radiant complexion.

Fibroin: The inner layer of silk. Nourishes for a healthy-looking luster.

Sericin: The outer layer of silk. Holds in essential moisture to minimize dryness and flaking.

Silk powder: Absorbs excess oil to help makeup last longer, while blurring the look of pores and wrinkles.

Anti-pollution and blue light compound: Creates a smooth surface on the skin to help resist the clinging of pollution particles, while deflecting blue light rays that may cause premature wrinkling and irregular skin pigmentation.

Japanese pearl powder: Imparts skin with a healthy-looking radiance.

Hadasei-3™: Our proprietary complex of double-fermented Uji green tea, Akita rice, and Okinawa Mozuku algae. This trinity of time-tested ingredients work in harmony to deliver radiant, healthy-looking skin. Rich in gentle AHAs and a symphony of essential amino acids, it supports the skin’s moisture-keeping factors while promoting natural surface cell turnover for brighter, beautiful skin at every age.

Tatcha x KASHOEN 1883
THE POWDER BRUSH

Since 1883, KASHOEN artisans have employed traditional techniques to create luxurious cosmetic brushes from Kumano, Japan, the epicenter of this time-honored craft. As the first Japanese brush manufacturer to export abroad, KASHOEN established the quality standard for cosmetic brushes today. As many as 50 different processes are used to create a single brush by hand, from start to finish.

Presented in a signature KASHOEN kiri wood box, The Powder Brush is the artisan’s first-ever animal-free tool, made with the highest quality synthetic fibers exclusively for Tatcha. The brand’s Director of Artistry and Education, makeup artist Daniel Martin, collaborated with this renowned brushmaker to craft the ideal tool for The Silk Powder. Each bristle is razor-trimmed by hand, creating variances in the length to better hug the contours of the face for seamless pickup and application. The ergonomically designed handle is made from smooth Japanese kiri wood, a beloved natural material known for its antibacterial properties. Like every KASHOEN brush, this piece is finished with a 24K gold ferrule, a nod to its luxurious craftsmanship.
