Marimekko celebrates its 70th anniversary. What started as a drive to bring more creative energy to post-war Finland has now become a global design house renowned for its art of printmaking.

Throughout the years, the brand aims to bring joy to people’s everyday lives with bold prints and colors. During2021, the spotlight will be on the very core of the brand: the art of printmaking. The collections and their prints will celebrate the beauty of life in all its myriad forms, drawing influences from major sources of inspiration for Marimekko’s print designers. To celebrate Marimekko’s phenomenal steps, Marimekko’s year will be filled with special activities, products and collaborations. 2021 will also see the launch of a revamped webstore and a new visual identity for the brand.

IT ALL STARTED WITH A DRESS?

Marimekko is Finnish for “Mari’s dress”. Since the company’s beginning in 1951, the Marimekko dress has been an emblem for women who walk their own path with confidence and style. In the 1950s, when the predominant fashion was rather restricting, Marimekko started making empowering dresses in abstract patterns and vibrant colors for women who are bold in expressing their personality through their choice of attire. Over the years, Marimekko’s anti-fashion became not only fashion but also a way of living. Marimekko is considered one of the first lifestyle brands to combine fashion, handbags and accessories, as well as home decor, into an expression of joyful living.

 The Art of printmaking collection

Marimekko’s first ready-to-wear collection in 2021 is an invitation to dive into the 70 years of Marimekko’s bold prints and vibrant colors. The collection highlights Marimekko’s rich and varied artistic legacy by bringing together some of the most iconic Marimekko prints with forward-looking new designs.  The common threads running through the collection are abstract art and geometry: light, effortless dresses and other easy-to-wear pieces reflect a futuristic play of basic forms such as the triangle, square and circle.

The collection’s color palette combines earthy, tone-to-tone shades with fresh accents of lemon yellow, sky blue, vivid red and sea green. To accompany warm alpaca knits and merino wool sweaters, cotton poplin, shimmering silk-viscose mixes and fluid crepe materials grace the season’s effortless dresses.

A new outlook on Marimekko – introducing Marimekko co-created

As a part of the anniversary year, Marimekko has invited young creatives to interpret the brand’s unique design language and philosophy. The result is Marimekko co-created, four limited-edition capsules of ready-to-wear and home items within the seasonal collections.  The co-created capsule for the year’s first collection – the Art of Printmaking collection – was created in collaboration with Finnish award-winning designers Antti Kekki and Matts Bjolin.

Opening the archives to the public – The Marimekko print library Maripedia

In 1951, Marimekko’s founder Armi Ratia established the company around creative printmaking. Her legacy of cherishing textile artistry has resulted in a true treasure trove – Marimekko’s print archive contains over 3,500 prints to date, and new prints add to this continuum of ambitious artwork each year. In celebration of 70 years of the brand’s original prints and colors, Marimekko will open its pattern archives to the public with Maripedia, an online print library.  During the first year, Maripedia will showcase 365 prints along with their fascinated birth stories. As the years go by, the library will grow.
